The county assessor claims I have more square footage than I do. How to remedy this?

Hi Steve! Assuming you feel that you are correct, you should have documentation to support your measurements. Also, you should concern yourself with the fact that any previous appraisal that has been completed on your property may have relied on the Tax Assessors measurements of your square footage and as such, if this measurement was more than the actual square footage, the True Value of your Home may have been overstated. Just wanted to put my thoughts into this string of comments for you to ponder. Also, this is actually the 1st time I have ever heard of someone suggesting the square footage that was being assessed was more than they actually had as it is usually the other way around for many reasons! All county assessors allow you to appeal your tax bill.. when it comes to square footage, each county will have a different process to prove you change.. some might require an appraisal, other counties might send a county employee to measure, etc.. but if the square footage is higher with the assessor than your actual home, then yes, it would cause your property taxes to be higher.. ..
