The first thing is to look at the credit and see the cause of the score levels. Is there something that can be done to increase the scores from what you have now. A 620 score will be important when looking at a VA option. Was there a Short Sale or Bankruptcy in the past 2 years? Has there been a prior use of the VA? You need to work on getting your credit scores up before applying because most lenders will require a 620 mid score for all borrowers to qualify, but 660 is ideal. There might be a few lenders out there that allow for lower scores, but in my experience, they typically have very strict guidelines, and most that apply get denied, so your far better off working on fixing up your credit. Try contacting a local mortgage broker and let them run your credit and from there they can give you accurate advise/guidance to help you get your credit scores up to the lenders minimum levels.
