The state of NC does not allow a loan officer to receive compensation for modifying an existing loan.

Loan Modification has been a very mixed topic over the past 3 years. You will find many third party (middlemen) companies that will offer to "assist" you with this process. They typically want you to pay an upfront fee and may also encourage you to intentionally miss a payment. Be extremely cautious if you choose to work with a company like this. I have yet to meet a home owner that benefited from the "services" of one of these companies but I have met several whose home ended up in foreclosure. If you are not currently behind on your payments you should make every attempt to refinance. If you are behind or do not qualify than your best course of action is to deal direct with your mortgage company. When you call, ask to speak to someone regarding the HAMP modification program.Best of luck to you and your family!
