Having no mortgage is so awesome... But if you are looking for a home equity loan, or any loan for that matter, your poor credit is going to be a major stumbling block for 98% of loans. But you should contact a mortgage broker in your area, give them a full application, and let them see if, while credit may be poor, if it is OK enough to get a loan.
