Yes, chargeoffs do negatively impact credit. The amount it will hurt depends on where your credit is now, how much the chargeoff is for, your other tradelines, etc.

Yes... any negative credit hurts. A charge off means you owned someone money, they attempted to collect it, and eventually gave up. Not exactly someone who may lend you money wants to see...

Any type of derogatory credit will have a negative impact on your credit.. some more severe than others.. having a debt that you were obligated to pay, but didn't looks bad, and will lower your score.. the older the debt is the less impact it has on your credit.. and for most states, charge offs drop off the credit report after 7 years.. .. I'm a Broker here in Scottsdale AZ and I only lend in Arizona. If you or someone you know is looking for financing options, feel free to contact me or pass along my information. William J. If it is very recent it will lower your credit score. If it is older and you have had good credit since it may not be an issue at all. Also take note that if the charge off still shows a balance the lender may request a credit supplement to prove that there is a $0 balance with nothing further owing. Also it may depend on if you are getting FHA, VA or Conventional financing.
