Army veteran and I have some unpaid student loan debt (about 12k) but on a repayment program. Can I use my VA benefits? by konst94 from Holladay, Tennessee. Mar 10th 2021
It depends. If your student loans went into default, it is likely the Department of Education reported you to CAIVRS. CAIVRS, the Credit Alert Verification Reporting System, is a database of individuals that have had a government guaranteed or secured obligation that has defaulted. Until CAIVRS is cleared of any reported items, a new VA, FHA or USDA loan will not be approved. Even if you were reported, you can negotiate an item to be cleared. Student loans typically require you either pay off the debt or be on a payment plan for a minimum period of time. It's not that hard, but I would suggest that you advise your chosen lender that you MAY have a CAIVRS item and ask them to pull a report early in the process so you can deal with it before it becomes a hard stop. ~ Bert Carpenter, The LoansA2z Team of NEXA Mortgage ~ NMLS 40586 ~ Licensed in AZ, CA, GA, IL, OR & WA...
