how can I check to see if I am completly off a mortgage?

I had a mortgage with my ex wife about 5 years ago. I believe that I have taken all the necessary steps to take myself off of that. I am ready to look for a new mortgage, but how can I be absolutely sure my name does not appear on any mortgage anywhere else>? by frank9200 from Madison, Wisconsin. Jun 28th 2010 Reply

Typically a obtaining and reviewing a Tri-Merge Credit Report (which contains reporting information from all three major agencies, Equifax, Experian and Trans Union) will reveal if you have any Mortgage debt where it is reported that you are responsible for payments. Major debts almost always show up, but private loans usually are not reported to the Credit Bureaus. If concerned about a particular property, you may research the Title information at the County where the property is located and you may be able to see what financing exists on it, or better yet, engage the services of a Title Co. to do an inexpensive prelim. title search for you. You may use this government mandated web site to obtain the credit report(s): www.annualcreditreport.com. Or you could apply for a mortgage with a credible Mortgage Lender of your choosing, explain your concerns up front, and they will likely (as is commonly understood to be a requirement anyway) obtain a no-charge credit report to verify your current debt. And you'd be further along in getting some kind of pre-approval.

This is Public Records. Your County Recorder's Office will have this information. Or, you can pay a Title Company to perform this task. If you are in California, I'll do this for you free of charge, even if it's not a jumbo loan which is all that I originate. .... Happy funding, Rudi
