A loan can be done almost exclusively through online, but as far as an actual closing of a house would need an in-person signing of documents. Hope this helps. I agree with the previously answer mainly because one must present ID and sign a book that states you are the person(s) obtaining the loan. The closer and/or notary has to complete some of the closing documents.
