The National Registry for Loan Officers is here: http://www.nmlsconsumeraccess.org/ The State of Nevada site is here: http://mld.nv.gov/AgentSearchALL.asp All Loan Officers must be registered and if they do not appear in the database or as an active agent, then they are not licensed. Please be careful when sharing your personal information with someone that is not a licensed loan officer.

Actually, there are a couple of things you can do to check out any prospective Loan Originator as well as the Mortgage Lending Company. The SAFE Act,( Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act of 2008) requires that every Mortgage Loan Officer in the Country be licensed and registered(some bank employees only have to be registered) with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System BEFORE they can legally take an application for a mortgage or discuss interest rates or other loan terms. Each LO and Company in the business MUST provide their NMLS number in all marketing material, or upon request. Go to www.NMLSConsumerAccess.org to verify they are properly registered. You can also look to see the employment background of the individual which can help you avoid working with a novice. If they do not have a valid NMLS number, RUN and report them to your state's Licensing Board. If they are properly Licensed and registered with the NMLS and State, check them out with the Better Business Bureau at www.bbb.org to see if and how many complaints they have against them. Absolutely! All Mortgage Loan Originators MUST be Federally licensed as well as within the state(s) which they are conducting business. The Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry (NMLS) will contain the data of each legitimate Loan Originator or Mortgage Banker/Broker and is viewable by the consumer at http://www.nmlsconsumeraccess.org/. If an Loan Originator is not in this system and does not have a unique NMLS number then he/she is a scammer with which you should not do business. Hope this helps!

In addition to the comprehensive list of online means of verifying their license status, work history, etc. from the previous answers, I would recommend using Google or Bing to search for the individual's name and also add the key word "complaint" to see if there are any other online clues as to their track record, etc. Best of luck!
