Can I co-borrow?

I am younger with a good job that I have been with for 2.5 years and an okay credit score of 620. I screwed up a lot when I was just 18. I have been working hard to build that credit score back up. Now I am looking to buy a home in the next year.My boyfriend and I have been been discussing buying something together. However his credit situation is worse than mine though we just started working on building his credit back up. I hope by the time we are going to buy a home he has a credit score of 620 or higher. My main concern is his job situation. He jumps jobs a lot (he works in construction in Michigan) I make about $30,000/ year and he make $40,000. I know as long as I keep my credit score going the way it is going I will be looking at a higher score. If he can meet the bare credit requirements what credit score would I need to have to co-sign or co-borrow with him if he can't qualify by himself? by Angel Kowalczyk from Auburn, Michigan. 640 is the threshold for most lenders, however there are lenders out there that will go below... some to 620, some 600, and some even lower.. The real questions is "Why"... why is your score low.. If you have defaulted student loans, you won't get a loan until they are paid and current... are there any unpaid taxes, or judgments?? You won't get a loan until that's taken care of as well.. Your boyfriends job jumping could be a problem but if he doesn't have any large gaps in between jobs, he should be ok... if you want to know for sure, you should a LOCAL mortgage broker and apply with them. Not the local "Big" bank, and certainly not one of those 50 states internet lenders...By applying with your LOCAL Broker, you have an advantage because he's familiar with local customs and works with numerous lenders, seeking out the best loan terms for your particular scenario. Because he has lower overhead, he can offer you lower rates and lower fees than most of the larger lenders.. I'm a Broker here in Scottsdale AZ and I only lend in Arizona. If you or someone you know is looking for financing options, feel free to contact me or pass along my information. 480-287-5714 WilliamAcres.com

Angel - you need to sit down with someone to look at both of your credit reports - The scores you are discussing are only a minor part of the picture. I took an application today for someone with a 618 and it is a good loan and will close, I turned someone down 3 hours later with a 698. No one can give you good advice without taking a full application. Your situation is too complex. The key is finding someone you trust - it doesn't matter if they work for a bank or a broker, but that they are committed to helping people buy homes in a responsible way. There is no quick fix for poor credit decisions in the past and you are not the only one that has made them. You are however, one of the few that are willing to fix it. I would be more than happy to help you find someone near you so you can sit down with them and develop a plan.
