He likely qualified for the mortgage without his wife and did not want the obligation to encumber both himself and his wife without any benefit in doing so.

More info needed.. If existing mortgage was taken out after the marriage, then the wife would have had to sign something allowing husband to encumber a marital asset. The document used for mortgages is a "Disclaimer Deed", this would be the wife waiving any marital ownership allowing the husband to take out a mortgage on his own. If the husband owned the home prior to the marriage, then it would make sense that the wife is not on the mortgage. Regardless, if wife is on the DEED.. then she will still have ownership rights. Again, more info needed.. I'm a preferred Lender with California and Arizona being my primary markets. If you or someone you know is looking for financing options, feel free to contact me or pass along my information. 480-287-5714 WilliamAcres.com NMLS# 226347 / RPM Mortgage NMLS 1541014 / AZMB0121893
