Credit score currently 610, what is the best and fastest way to get to high 600's?

I have heard that if you close accounts, it doesn't help your score. What things can I do as I am looking to purchase in the next 3-6 months. by sherry403 from Mamou, Louisiana. Feb 5th 2016 Reply

Hard to say without seeing the credit report....but some tips to raise your scores is pay down credit card debt to 30 to 35% of available limit. Do not close accts as that chokes off your credit. Paying to zero is fine, just leave it open. Not much else I can advise without the report. Hope this helps.

If you would like to set up a time to talk, we can look at doing a pre-approval over the phone and review the credit together (you will also have access to a copy at not cost). My company offers a program that will tell us what we can do to raise all 3 scores (and then update the scores) and we don't charge for this service as most companies pass on this cost to the client being it is very costly. Don't CLOSE any accounts, start by paying down credit card balances to less than 30% of the limit, pay any collections/charge offs less than 12 months old, don't open any new accounts or open any new loans...

In order to advise you properly, we would need to see your credit report, but in general, closing revolving accounts will do more damage than harm... It's better to pay your balances down to 30% or lower.. that will give you the biggest improvement.. But if you have no revolving accounts, and your score is low because of derogatory events, then the only thing that will fix it would be credit repair or time.. I'm a Broker here in Scottsdale AZ and I only lend in Arizona. If you or someone you know is looking for financing options, feel free to contact me or pass along my information. William J. Everyone's credit file is different. Call us 225.665.4399 or apply on our website MORTGAGE225.com if you want us to take a look at it and let you know what steps you need to take to qualify. We lend on FHA down to a 580 and are local. Thanks, Erica

You wouldn't want to close the accounts as that would lower your total credit available and you would potentially lose your longer standing credit accounts. Pay everything on time and be sure to have at least 3 credit lines open, preferably an installment (car loan, student loan, secure loan), and revolving accounts (credit cards, retail cards).
