Can my grandpa be denied a mortgage because of his age? He's a healthy 78yo

No, a lender cannot consider age when it comes to qualification.

Although it is true that a lender cannot legally decline someone from a loan based on age, it does not mean that they won't try and find another reason to decline an elderly person, if they really don't want to do the loan. If you are asking because you think he may be denied due to age, go ahead and have him apply.
