Credit Score: 800 versus 500

Friday, June 14, 2013 - Article by: Joe LaVallie - HomeStreet Bank - Message

People with 800 credit scores manage their credit differently than people with 500 credit scores. Let's take a look at 5 key areas of credit management and see what they are doing diferently:

NUMBER OF CREDIT CARDS: People with 800 credit scores usually have over 6 credit cards while people with 500 scores usually have less than 2.

OPEN CREDIT ACCOUNTS: People with 800 credit scores usually have over 8 open credit accounts while people with 500 scores usually have less than 3.

TOTAL CREDIT CARD DEBT: People with 800 credit scores usually owe over five thousand while people with 500 scores usually owe less than four thousand.

TOTAL CONSUMER DEBT: People with 800 credit scores usually owe over sixty thousand while people with 500 scores usually owe less than forty five thousand.

ONE TIME PAYMENTS: People with 800 credit scores usually pay their bill on time while people with 500 scores usually only pay their bills on time sixty percent of the time.

WANT A HIGHER CREDIT SCORE? Pay your bills on time.

THE ONE EXCEPTION. You can be paying all your bills on time and still have a lower credit score than you think you deserve. The component you are missing is the percentage of balance owed to the credit limit on the credit card. Keep your credit card balances under 50% of the credit limit.
